Job Description: The nutrition nurse lead will have an integral role within the current nutritional support team and nutrition steering committee (NSC). The specialist nurse will work to provide advanced care to patients receiving nutritional support. They will be available to support nurses caring for enteral or parentally feed patients, whilst also leading educational sessions and reviewing current feeding policies alongside other members of the team (i.e. dietitian, pharmacist and gastroenterologist). The nutrition nurse will be instrumental in training nurses on new, and evidence based procedures linked to enteral (i.e. CORTRAK) or parental feeding. Duties and Responsibilities: -To develop a Nurse Led Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition Service -To work closely with the Dietetic team -To provide expert advice to patients requiring enteral or parenteral feeding -To introduce a new Outreach service for the placement of NG tubes -Advise nurses` on the management of long term enteral feeding i.e. percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeding, and support patients who may me experiencing complications i.e. buried bumper syndrome -Recognise complications of total parenteral nutrition, and support nurses initiate appropriate actions as necessary -Work closely with clinical HODs in investigating incidents and introducing new systems / training to improve practice -Be proficient in the preparation processes needed for patients` home discharge on enteral feeding, and contribute towards the necessary arrangements for safe discharges into the community -Provide specialist and practical advice for patients and families leading up to their discharges on enteral feeding -Keep up to date with evidence based guidelines (i.e. British Association of Parental and Enteral Nutrition (BAPEN), and revise hospital processes to ensure their relevance and practicability Skills & Experience: -NMC registered -Extensive experience with Parenteral / Enteral feeding -Achieved or working towards a recognised Nutrition related post-graduate qualification -Experience as CNS EN/TPN or Nutrition Link Nurse -Have excellent knowledge in, and practical skills for placing enteral feeding tubes (i.e. nasogastric tubes) and checking placements (i.e. pH monitoring and Cortrak) -Previous experience of managing a small team -Expertise working within relevant specialities including but not limited to: nutrition support (oral, enteral and parenteral), gastrointestinal conditions, medical and surgical wards, oncology, ITU/critical care, and Bariatric About the Individual: The successful candidate will be able to self-motivate, prioritise their work load and meet deadlines. They will have excellent presentation skills to large and small groups, both informal and formal, and effective teaching skills. The successful candidate will also have excellent customer care and interpersonal skills. They will be highly organised with exceptional time management skills and an ability to work under pressure.
