The Paediatric department has dramatically grown over the past few years and they now have 45 inpatient beds + 11 day case treatment areas. All areas and are equipped with the latest technology to provide high quality care to our paediatric patients. The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit is a new addition to their clinical service portfolio and has been operational since November 2011. They are a spacious, modern 10 bed unit and are equipped with the latest technology to provide advanced respiratory and organ support all of which is medically supported by their team of Consultant Paediatric Intensivists 24/7. Their nursing ratio is 1:1 which reflects the acuity of the children who are admitted to their unit.

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible and accountable without direct supervision for the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of required care for children in a critical care setting.The Senior Staff Nurse will undertake delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse. The successful candidate will promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence based practice.
Candidates are required to do a minimum of 8 shifts per month and part time, flexible working and bank positions are also available.
Duties and Responsibilities:
To ensure the provision of excellent, evidence based nursing care for the children and their families
To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff
Assist in ensuring the safety of the department and the risk management process
To provide a challenging environment for junior colleagues to promote their development
To act as a clinical role model
To participate in staff performance reviews and staff developments
Skills & Experience:
- NMC Registered with a valid RN8/RNC (or equivalent)
- ENB 415/405/100 or a Paediatric/Neonatal critical care pathway full award
- Basic/Intermediate Paediatric Life Support
- Assessing and mentoring qualification
- Experience at senior level within HDU/PICU
- Teaching and mentoring experience
- Excellent clinical governance, experience with audits and an understanding of safeguarding issues
- To be competent in the administration of medication, including intravenous routes as well as tracheostomy and ventilation skills

The successful candidate will be caring but assertive with excellent communication skills and a strong understanding of cross cultural needs. They will need to be able to work flexibly and under pressure, using initiative and leadership skills.
