 Role Summary 

This role is an opportunity to make a real difference in a multi site children’s hospice.

Working with a fellow Practice Educator (paediatric), the job holder will maintain and further develop clinical training programmes for all care professionals in the Trust, in line with our agreed educational strategy. This will include supporting clinical theory and skills assessments, continued development of a robust clinical competency framework and assisting with the regular review of skill mix and care needs. In addition, you will work directly within the clinical area, advising and supporting the development of competency and confidence. You will therefore need to be an excellent practitioner who is seen as a role model.

     

·  Inform and lead on mandatory training requirements for the whole Trust including

non care staff

·  Represent  the Trust  at external  training  events and  participate  in  learning  and

development groups with other hospices or agencies as appropriate

·  Raise  the educational profile of  the Trust by presenting at regional and national

conferences

·  To  lead  on,  build  and  develop  the  current  training  programme  supporting  the

professional development of all care team staff

·  To support clinical theory and skills development for all care team staff to sustain

quality care delivery 

·  To  support  the  development  of  clinical  competence  of  the  care  team    in  line with  agreed  educational development strategies and priorities 

·  To  work  regularly  with  the  care  team  within  the  clinical  rota  ,  role  modelling,

advising and supporting their development of competency and confidence

·  Participate  in  reviewing  skill mix  and  appropriate  staffing  to meet  the  needs  of children and young people accessing the service

Key Duties and responsibilities

Clinical skills and learning development

·  Demonstrate a high degree of evidence-based knowledge and act as a clinical  role model by participating in clinical activity across the service

·  Provide  expert  knowledge  to  support Clinical  Team  Leaders  in maintaining  a  safe clinical  environment, while  also  developing  the  competence  and  confidence  of  the care team

·  Assess and evaluate care regularly to ensure best practice is maintained within local and national guidelines

·  Evaluate learning and clinical activities to identify and inform future practice

·  To  lead  on  identifying  the  personal  and  professional  development  requirements  of

trained staff, utilising work-based learning to enhance quality of care

·  Promote  life-long  learning  among  qualified  staff  through  reflective  practice  and  to build on the training and development programme

 ·  Develop  and  implement  competency  frameworks  in  order  to  assess  the  ongoing

development of clinical and professional skills

·  To use a range of skills to influence, inspire and encourage learners

·  Lead  on  strategic  practice  development  initiatives  across  the  Trust  e.g.  quality

assurance; documentation

·  To contribute to the development of standards and performance 

·  To  be  competent  in  presenting  and  leading  teaching  and  training  in  a  variety  of settings and to a variety of audiences both clinical and non-clinical.

Knowledge and Information Resources 

·  To keep up to date with areas of clinical practice informing the service of all changes

·  Responsible  for  providing  accurate  and  complete  data  to  maintain  the  training database as appropriate and produce monthly reports as requested 

·  To  be  computer  literate  and  able  to  work  with  a  variety  of  internet  based packages/models 

·  To build and maintain links with local universities to support shared learning

·  To support staff and placement students as required,  including  the  identification and

support of staff with additional learning needs

·  Lead in the development of evidence-based policies and guidelines for the care and management of life limited children, young people and their families/carers 

Personal and People Development 

·   Maintain  own  clinical  expertise  through  regular  placement  at  local  NHS  Trust (honorary contract)

·  To participate  in networking, professional updates and benchmarking  to maintain a

current knowledge of professional issues 

·  To generate and use appropriate learning opportunities and apply own learning to the future development of practice

·  To  maintain  a  Personal  Development  Portfolio,  in  line  with  Wessex  Children’s Hospice Policy and NMC Registration

·  To contribute to the development of others enabling them to apply current knowledge and skills in practice

·  To actively promote the workplace as a learning environment encouraging everyone to learn from each other and from external good practice. 

·  To maintain continuing professional development and clinical practice by continuing to work in the clinical area

·  To  lead  on  the  development  of  the  clinical  competencies  framework  in  line  with evidence based practice 

·  Contribute to quality standards and assessments
