Position: Oncology Team Leader

The hospital has 85 beds with all rooms offering the privacy and comfort of en-suite facilities, satellite TV and telephone, five theatres, and an intensive care unit.
Role:
Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, you will be responsible for the Nursing Team, Oncology. You will ensure the seamless provision of a high quality nursing care, for Oncology patients with responsibility for standards of patient care within Oncology and supporting Oncology patients, through effective leadership. Operational responsibility for the care of Oncology patients, ensuring efficient communication is maintained at all levels. Ensure compliance with all relevant internal and external policies and regulations.
Core Responsibilities:
- Lead, motivate and manage a team of qualified and unqualified nurses in relation to Oncology, ensuring that clinical practice is patient centred, dynamic and research based in accordance with the NMC Scope of Professional Practice
- Coordinate all activities in relation to Oncology to provide high quality clinical care and comfort for patients, ensuring that relevant pathways are in place to ensure efficient management of patients, both within the Oncology Day Case and provision of support to the Oncology inpatient
- Provide leadership and direction in the commissioning of the new Unit, ensuring relevant pathways and operating procedures are in place
- Compliance with established work standards, nursing policies and procedures and development/maintenance of new standards, policies and procedures
- Direct involvement in recruitment of ward staff
- Plan staff appraisal programmes and ensures appraisals are carried out in line with hospital objectives
- Act as a recognised resource for clinical issues to the nursing team
- Encourage evidence led and research based practice through clinical supervision
- Monitor all entries to nursing documents to ensure accurate completion
- Undertakes certain ‘extended role’ duties according to hospital policy and scope of professional practice
- Order, store, administer and document all medications in accordance with hospital policy
- Be accountable for your own practice and take every opportunity to sustain and improve your knowledge and skills with reference to PREP
- Through leadership and example promote team nursing
- To support the provision of a training and development programme for ward/consulting suite staff to enhance clinical skills and knowledge in relation to Oncology
- Responsible for nursing rotas, which incorporate skill mix and patient dependency, using the companies Skill Mix Dependency Tool and including the approval of leave ensuring adequate cover is maintained at all times
- Develop the correct provision of ward equipment and supplies based on patient needs, developing technology and business development
- Takes an active role in completing the Unit standards audit cycle
- Undertakes regular checks of work to assess output, quality etc, in order to improve quality of total patient care
- Promote individuals accountability/responsibility for patient care at ward level whilst avoiding de-skilling of staff
- Monitor infection control within the Unit
- Management reference point for the standards of hygiene within the ward Unit
- Advise the Director of Clinical Services of all accidents, incidents and complaints, completing records as per hospital policy
- Co-ordinate yearly risk assessment review
- Complies with obligations in respect of Health and Safety at Work Legislation, fire drills, etc
- Update policies and procedures and ensure nursing staff are aware of policy changes
- Approving leave and ensure adequate cover is maintained
- To ensure the Uniform Policy is adhered to and promote the image of the company
- To participate in the Nurse Administrative Rota, providing Senior Nurse advice to the hospital
- To contribute to, and support, the provision of clinical practice for pre-registration and appropriate post-registration students to fulfil curriculum requirements and ensure that appropriate educational/supervisory opportunities are provided
Key Accountabilities:
- Undertakes the recruitment and selection of staff and arrange for their orientation /induction to the Department
- Organise for staff appraisals to be carried out to support and motivate the staff, in their continuous development
- In conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services, manage the Departmental Budget with regard to the financial implications of materials, equipment and human resources
- Monitor the budget through monthly report analysis
- Communicate information in an organised, logical and concise manner
- Participate in a Nurse Administrative rota for the Hospital
- Establish and maintain good professional relationships with patients, consultants, relatives and visitors
- Maintains safe control and custody of controlled drugs kept in the Unit and ensures that all drugs are administered according to agreed company policy and health & safety regulations.
Professional Development
- Contribute to the development of a learning environment, which supports clinical professional development and the advancement of nursing practice
- Assist in teaching concepts, skills and processes and supports all staff in their individual professional development
- Attends appropriate training courses to improve the standard of practice
- To monitor and facilitate staff attendance at mandatory training days.
Specific Knowledge/Qualifications
Educational
- Required: RGN (Level 1)
- Required: Teaching and assessment qualification (ENB 998/730)
- Preferred: A professional management qualification eg NVQ level 3 or 4
- Preferred: Postgraduate training and a qualification in an area of specialist responsibility ie cytotoxic/chemotherapy training (N59/ENB 237 or equivalent)
Previous knowledge, skills and/or experience
- Required: Post qualification experience
- Required: Previous clinical management experience
- Preferred: Staff and budget management experience
- Preferred: Previous experience of looking after Oncology patients
- Desirable: Experience within the independent healthcare sector
